Default Ford 2011 Mustang Price Competition

Well if Toyoburu doesn't come through, got to have alternates and this is cheaper than a Nissan 370Z.

The basic 2011 Mustang coupe is slated to have a suggested retail price of $22,995.

2011 Ford Mustang Pricing Trickles Out | StangNet

That much-improved power plant for the 2011 Ford Mustang V6 is the 3.7-liter version of the all-aluminum, 60-degree Duratec V6, 305 hp at 6,500 rpm and 280 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm

Oh, and the 3.7 V6 is not only 2 dBA quieter than the old motor but also it sounds decidedly less like the bleating of a dying donkey.

You might care that all V6 models will now come with dual exhaust, because the single exhaust "looks so tremendously lame." (We're quoting ourselves here).

Vehicle weighs almost exactly the same as it did last year (somewhere just north of 3,400 pounds)

Meanwhile the old five-speed manual transmission has also been swapped out for the Getrag/Ford MT82 six-speed manual

And, oh, all V6 Mustangs get a standard limited-slip differential. That's nice.

FT-86 and Mustang differ in the purpose of engineering. It's like comparing Supra and SC430, or orange and apple.

2011 Ford Mustang V6 rated 31 mpg highway, most efficient 300+ HP car ever.

2011 Ford Mustang V6 rated 31 mpg highway, most efficient 300+ HP car ever — Autoblog

The concept of the FT-86 is to make an inexpensive RWD sports car ~$20,000.
The 2011 V6 Mustang is an inexpensive low $20K car, almost here. With Toyotas recall problems, will
the FT-86 ever go on sale?

The Nissan 370Z VQ is tuned to 330 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 270 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm.
The 2011 3.7-liter version of the all-aluminum, 60-degree Duratec V6, 305 hp at 6,500 rpm and 280 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm compares well to this higher class engine.

BMWs 335i new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder with a single twin-scroll turbocharger, high-precision fuel injection, and an all-aluminum crankcase, produces 300 horsepower at 5800 rpm. Peak toque is 300 pound-feet, at 1,200 rpm.

Assuming the Ford's gearing doesn't completely SUCK (which I'm afraid it will, if it gets 31mpg), it's going to be a fun little car. I'm still hoping the FT-86 is more like a RWD version of the MINI Cooper S, with ~200hp and a 2600lb weight instead of 300hp and a 3400lb weight, but we'll have to see. I'd definitely say that Toyota should have a 2011 V6 Mustang on hand when they're determining the final price/specs of the FT-86, as it's probably going to be cross-shopped to some degree.

Modern Muscle = Dragster.
Modern Sport car = fun to drive, great handling.
There are also reasons people buying 30K 370Z over 22K Stang, so FT-86 over Stang.

Stangs are used more than just for drag racing. They are also used in road racing where handling is also important. Ford builds special models like the FR500's for road racing off the shelf and the historic BOSS 302s which they just brought back for racing and maybe for the street in 2014 when they go IRS.

If the FT86 comes out let numbers show what the Flat-4 has vs the Base Stang. Plus the Stang will always have a large aftermarket of performance parts at competitive prices because of the volume. But seriously, these are budget cars. For people who really want to go fast spend alot more and do it safely on a racetrack.

The Mustang Ladder
Together, Ford Racing's Dan Davis and MMP's Larry Miller have created a ladder of Mustang racing cars that can carry you right to the top tier of international racing.

The MMP-prepared 300-hp Mustang GT for the Ford Racing High-Performance Driving School at Miller Motorsports Park introduces you to the idea of driving a Mustang fast. Then the 325-hp Mustang FR500S offers a chassis that's both adjustable enough and friendly enough to reward a skilled driver, and matches it with a professional racing series. Next, the 420-hp Mustang FR500C lets you step up to a race-winning ride in the Grand-Am Koni Challenge Series. Finally, the Mustang FR500GT4 is homologated for the FIA GT4 European Cup Championship.

very interesting indeed, might need to consider this as well. Mustangs are pretty dope especially when done up right.

I hate to pick on you seeing as thus I'm new to this forum but that's really the worst example you could have chosen. There may be a difference in purpose but not engineering, Lexus SC and supra are mechanical twins, minus some aluminum bits on the supra. Albeit i do agree with what your getting at. On another note if what Toyota is saying is indeed true and not just planted propaganda, they are indeed foreshadowing their demise as distinctive company.

I think this is a pretty good comparison. The 2011 Stang (from the reviews I've read) is actually a capable sports coupe and with 31mpg (auto only) and 300hp it's a viable purchase for anyone looking for some $22k fun. Toyota is going to need to keep that, the Camero, Challenger, and Genesis Coupe in mind when pricing this car.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track test - Motor Trend

Power/weight is going to be Toyota's advantage, being almost 1000Lb lighter than the competition (fingers crossed). Lower weight makes up for the lower power and will also instantly turn into better handling which is my real concern.

Also, RWD Mini Cooper S is an excellent analogy. I'd buy one of those yesterday.

what a coincidence. i test drove both the 5.0 with the shorter FD and a v6 "value leader" (read: rental car trim), with the standard FD. currrently where i live ford has employee discounts on top of manufacturer rebates, which amounted to an almost $4500cdn redouction in the MSRP on the 5.0. i only drove the 6spd manual versions, and although the 5.0 just blows me away, anyone who can only afford the v6 version has nothing to be ashamed of.
